Sport
Thursday Sport
All students are expected to take part in some form of sporting activity every Thursday afternoon. Students are expected to wear the approved sport uniform for the sport they are playing.
Boys and girls in Year 7 are placed into co-educational, mixed ability groups and do 'skill' type sessions for three week periods in Terms 1 - 3 in order to improve technique and also introduce some sports that they may not have encountered.
Students in Years 8 - 11 (and Year 7 in Term 4) have the opportunity to participate in grade competition or recreation sport. Grade sport students compete against neighbouring high schools in many sports depending on the season and recreational sport provides avenues for students to participate in less serious, non-competitive activities The year for sport is divided into two seasons: a summer season for Terms 1 and 4; a winter season for Terms 2 and 3.
Attendance at Sport is a requirement of the Department of Education and Training. Leave from sport is granted only in certain circumstances and after the agreement of the Principal. Should any student request leave during the period allocated to sport, a note explaining the circumstances is to be brought to the Deputy Principal. Dental or medical appointments should be made outside of normal school hours, and not during sport or other periods.
Students not participating in sport must produce a note signed by a parent, explaining the reason for non-participation. Provision will be made for these students to undertake supervised private study at school.
In cases where accidents occur at sporting venues, where medical attention is obviously necessary and a parent is not available, staff will send for an ambulance and inform the parent as soon as possible of the action taken.
Carnivals
Students have the opportunity each year to participate in the school swimming, athletics and cross-country carnivals, then if successful go on and represent at Zone, Region and State level in these sports.
For these carnivals, the students are placed in four different colour Houses that the school uses to foster sportsmanship and competition. The Houses are Jibbon, Burraneer, Gunnamatta and Yowie, names that represent the surrounding bays.
The school conducts a “Colour Day” prior to the swimming and athletics carnival which enables the students to develop comraderie among their own House whilst also having some fun.
Knock Out Sport
The school provides the opportunity for students to compete in state-wide knock-out competitions in a wide variety of sports . Currently we have very competitive sides in Girls Touch (State Champions in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004) Girls Soccer, Hockey, Cricket, Netball and Tennis along with Boys Soccer, Hockey, Rugby League and Netball.
In 2008 the school produced 48 Sydney East Regional Representatives, 2 NSW CHS representatives, 22 students representing at NSW All Schools competitions, 3 Pacific Games representatives, 3 State Relay Teams, 3 students received a Sydney East Regional Blue and 1 student received a NSWCHS Blue and another the Pierre de Coubertin Award.
Port Hacking High School also competes within the Sydney East Area and every student has the opportunity to trial and represent Sydney East in all sports that NSWCHS Sport Association offers.
