Student leadership

Student welfare

From the Principal

The HSC is well under way now, and our students appear to be dealing with their exams calmly. I caution all our readers to take any media fuss over HSC exams with a dose of scepticism. There are always a few exams which pose questions in a different format compared to past years, in order to make students think rather than regurgitate memorised answers. It must also be said that web based communication makes it easy for a few to build up and maintain a bit of outrage, and journalists pickup on this to manufacture headlines. Students are prepared to be tested on any part of their courses in any way, and I am glad to Port Hacking Year 12’s getting through their exams calmly. I expect that Year 10 will do the same next week with their School Certificate tests.

Enrolments for next yaer continue to be strong, and at present I am interviewing Year 5 students who will be choosing a high school in March. Soon Ms Van Dulst and I will begin to interview our Year 7’s for next year as an introduction to Port Hacking. This sets up the partnership with parents for the next six years.

Over the holidays we had additional shade shelter built on the south side of the library, and we will soon have our connected classroom installed in 118 with interactive whiteboard and video conference facilities. Our plan to continue to rebuild our facilities continues. Finally, congratulations to the newly appointed captains and prefects for 2010/2011. These students had to present a nomination speech to their peers in Year 11, secure votes in the election, and then undertake selection panel interview for captain and vice captain. They all showed maturity and a passion for leadership that will serve them well in their roles. I could not have done what they have done at the same age.
