From the Principal

The HSC is well under way now, and our students appear to be dealing with their exams calmly. I caution all our readers to take any media fuss over HSC exams with a dose of scepticism. There are always a few exams which pose questions in a different format compared to past years, in order to make students think rather than regurgitate memorised answers. It must also be said that web based communication makes it easy for a few to build up and maintain a bit of outrage, and journalists pickup on this to manufacture headlines.…read more

Port Hacking student shines

Year 9 student Melanie Lappas shines on the snowfields. During the months of July, August and September this 15 year old spends her time training on the NSW ski fields for her ultimate goal of representing Australia. Melanie competed for Port Hacking High School in the recent Northern Region Interschool competition winning the GS snowboarding and boarder cross events for her age group.

In the World Industries, Continental Cup Boarder Cross championships held in Mt Hotham Victoria, Melanie raced against the worlds ranked #2 and #3 competitors from Canada as well as the Japanese and Australian national champions to finish overall in 7th place. This ranks her as the current number 3 boarder cross racer in Australia. Melanie also went on to place 2nd overall in the Ocean and Earth Australian Pro Series in Perisher a week later.

Melanie will go onto compete at the State Interschool championships competing for a spot at the National championships to be held in September this year.

Mind Marathon

Twelve talented Year 7/8 boys represented Port Hacking HS exceptionally well at the East Hills Boys Mind Marathon on Wednesday 12th August. After several grueling rounds of engineering, creative, maths, science, general knowledge and sports challenges our teams placed 2nd and 9th out of 41 teams. Congratulations to our silver medallists Sapir Dvuchbabny, Cheston Lee, Michael Richardson, Edmond Ngai, Jackson Towns and Benjamin Clark who were only four points behind the winning team from Macquarie Fields High School. Congratulations also to our 9th placed team of Liam Bruton, Jackson Rose, Jamie Katsamatsas, Darryl Chow, Matthew Mortlock and Garry Lu.
