English

English is a compulsory subject for all students from 7-12. Students cover the following in their studies:

There is considerable flexibility in the study of texts. Choices are made to interest and extend students, enabling literacy skills to be developed. Students are also encouraged to participate in enrichment activities (Debating, Public Speaking).

Stage 4 (Years 7-8)

All students develop skills necessary for Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Viewing and Representing. The program includes:

  1. At least two works of fiction
  2. A wide range of types of poems - poetry drawn from anthologies and one or two poets.
  3. At least two works of film
  4. At least two works of non-fiction.

The program also includes at least two works of drama, one of which is a Shakespeare text. Each student will examine print text, visual text, media and multimedia texts drawn from:

Stage 5 (Years 9-10)

All students develop skills necessary for Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking Viewing and Representing. The program includes:

  1. At least two works of fiction
  2. A wide range of types of poems - poetry drawn from anthologies and one or two poets.
  3. At least two works of film
  4. At least two works of non-fiction
  5. At least two works of drama, one being a Shakespeare text.

Skills will be assessed through a wide range of tasks (Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing, Viewing and Representing). Students are required to show an appreciation of texts drawn from:

Stage 6 (Years 11-12)

We have available the following courses:

Preliminary (Year 11)

Preliminary English (Advanced) course students explore how events, experiences, ideas, values and processes are represented in texts. How texts reflect different values and attitudes is analysed.

Preliminary English (Standard) course students explore and experiment with the ways events, experiences, ideas and processes are represented in texts.

Extension 1 English may only be taken by students undertaking Advanced English. This course explores how and why texts are valued in a range of contexts.

HSC (Year 12)

Year 12 students complete an Area of Study worth 40% of their course assessment and three Modules, each worth 20%.
