Band-Music Ensembles

All Music Ensembles have a number of performance opportunities at school functions, community events and in competitions during the year. Selected ensembles tour biannually.

Students have the opportunity to participate in the following ensembles:

Percy Grainger Band

The Grainger Concert Band is a band consisting of technically proficient musicians. This is a balanced ensemble that plays more challenging repertoire. The band rehearses once a week and entry is by audition, usually in the first week of term one each year.

David Stanhope Band

The Stanhope Concert Band is the entry level band for students that already have some proficiency on a band instrument. The band rehearses once a week and entry is by audition, usually in the first week of term one each year.

Greg Butcher Band

The Butcher Concert Band caters for players with limited or no previous experience but wish to learn to play an instrument. The band rehearses once a week and there is no audition requirement for entry to this band.

Senior Stage Band

Senior Stage Band rehearses twice a week and caters for technically proficient musicians who enjoy the challenge of stage band repertoire and arrangements. Entry is by audition and it is assumed that players are also a member of one of the Concert Bands. A small group of vocalists selected from the school choir also rehearse and perform with this band.

Junior Stage Band

Junior Stage caters for developing musicians who enjoy the challenge of stage band repertoire and arrangements. Entry is by audition and it is assumed that players are also a member of one of the Concert Bands.

JazzPort

JazzPort is for technically proficient musicians and vocalists who have an interest in playing jazz standards and learning about improvisation. It is a weekly tutorial style rehearsal and the group plays regularly at school functions and outside venues.

Choir

The choir is open to any member of the school, whether beginner or advanced and entry is by audition. The choir rehearse a variety of challenging repertoire and perform at school functions and community events.

Tuition is available on given instruments on a needs basis. Currently tuition is available on the following instruments:

Performance opportunities

The school boasts a fully equipped auditorium with sound and lighting rigs, a large stage area, a concert sized grand piano, orchestra pit and tiered seating for over 600. The students and staff at Port Hacking High have a commitment to the delivery of regular, high quality performances which include:
